Driver fined $2,000 for false insurance

Yesterday, Imran Dhanoo, 40, of Piparo was fined $2,000. In default of payment, he will serve six months in jail.

He pleaded guilty when he appeared in the San Fernando Magistrates Court. Since his arrest on June 4, the father of one appeared on a few occasions before another magistrate. Yesterday, the charge of uttering a false Bankers Insurance certificate, knowing it to be false, was read to him by Magistrate Bramanand Dubay Prosecutor Sergeant Gordon Maharaj told the magistrate that at about 3.30 pm on June 4, PC Renn had cause to stop a car on the Guaracara/ Tabaquite Road, Kumar Village, Williamsville.

Dubay heard the policewoman asked Dhanoo to produce his driving documents. He handed over what purported to be an insurance certificate, but upon inspection of the document, Renn realised it was a photocopy. Renn told Dhanoo the signature on the certificate appeared to have been photocopied. The court was told Dhanoo replied, “Boss, I paid a man I knew only as James $1,000 for the insurance.” The false document was tendered into evidence.

Dhanoo’s attorney Cedric Neptune pleaded for leniency for him saying he has a young daughter who will begin attending primary school in September.

Dhanoo, the attorney added, was convicted two and a half years ago for driving under the influence of alcohol. Dubay granted him 60 days to pay the fine.
