Elderly couple cry foul

According to the couple, a malfunctioning water system in their neighbours’ yard have for years, seeped water onto their property.

In addition to this, a broken gutter system, also located on their neighbours compound, continues to direct water onto their property following heavy rainfall events.

Frustrated at the structural damage the water has done to their home and the land it is located on, the couple lamented that for the past several years they have tried to take matters into their own hands to resolve the issue but these efforts have allegedly been blocked by Borough Corporation, for unknown reasons, which they suspect is a case of sabotage.

The couple insists that over the years they have tried to build a concrete structure to restrict the flow of water from the next-door property but the local authority has written them on many time to desist. Further to these claims, on occasions when they have tried to sought clarity from the corporation on why, the corporation will instead visit persons in the neighbouring property and refuses to communicate with them.

After reaching out multiple times to the Caroni Health Unit, the Chaguanas Borough Corporation, the councillor for the area and spending over $6,000 in lawyers, to have the problem dealt with, the couple has had enough and is demanding that the problem be dealt with swiftly, by all parties involved.

Grateful that they have not yet fallen sick to the now festering mosquito problem that has resulted from the water problem, the couple does not know how longer they can bear with the problem as the current two-inch pipe they have installed on their property to partially regulate the water and the disinfectant they use, only barely addressed the issue.

When Newsday contacted Janelle Joe-Ryan, councillor for the Balmoral Park area, she stated that the issue being brought forward by the couple has never been communicated to her or her office.

Joe-Ryan highlighted the severity of the claims being made but insisted that if a matter of such nature was ever brought to her attention, she would deal with it effectively.
