Small businesses in schools
THE EDITOR: This is a proposal for healthy discussion, debate, consideration and study by all parties concerned. I propose that every Government assisted secondary school, and maybe even tertiary level educational institutes be given the opportunity and wherewithal to run a business enterprise of their own. Start up plant, infrastructure and capital could be provided by Government through soft loans, and the business acumen could be provided by private industry.
To further push forward this enterprise each school could be affiliated to a private company on a profit sharing basis. This would enable the said schools the means whereby they can assist in the funding of some of their own facility development projects, it can facilitate minor school maintenance, and also assist in the production and staging of extra-curricular activities. These businesses could be run and managed by principals, teachers and students on a rotational basis.
This will minimise the time that each partaking party has to allocate to this venture, and will give all an opportunity to make a valuable input towards its success. It will be especially useful for the students (our future leaders) to gain valuable insight into the world of work and vital “hands on” experience that should help with the development of their business management skills. For Trinbago’s sake, let us harness and develop the full potential of our young people and especially so, the creative genius of their bright young minds.
