Women cricketers decide future
EXECUTIVE members of the West Indies Women’s Cricket Federation will be holding a special executive meeting at the Sir Frank Worrell Development Centre, Balmain today. The major item for discussion on the agenda is the regional women’s participation in the upcoming World Cup in South Africa. The Federation have called upon the Caribbean corporate community as well Caricom governments to step forward and assist the team in their preparation. They also want to raise enough money to send the squad to the World Cup which is scheduled to be staged during March and April.
The 18-member training squad attended a camp last October in Balmain and started another on Thursday at the Sir Frank Worrell Development Centre. The Women Federation are also involved in a transition process and will soon merge with the West Indies Cricket Board. This has to happen because the International Cricket Council (ICC) have instructed all their affiliates to ensure that women cricketers are not left behind in the promotion and development of the game worldwide. The officials will also discuss today the impending merger with the West Indies Cricket Board plus long term funding.
The Executive Committee will also meet with all members of the World Cup training squad as well as members of the selection panel. St Lucian Carol Whilby-Maxwell, president of the WIWCF, will chair the proceedings and the other executive members are Nadica McIntyre (first vice-president), Elizabeth Williams (2nd vice-president), Ann Browne-John (secretary), Cinda Bobb (treasurer), Keith Joseph (Public Relations Officer) and Margaret Antoine (committee member). The World Cup team selection panel comprises Ann Browne-John (coach), Stephanie Power (captain), Raphael Croney (Grenada) and Rita Scott (Jamaica, former WI player).
