Baptism of fire for St Augustine

SAN JUAN Secondary Comprehensive treated league debutantes St Augustine Community College (SACC) to a baptism of fire, trouncing the newcomers 64-33 at the Eastern Regional Sport Facility, Orange Grove Road, Tacarigua yesterday. To their credit St Augustine appear to be better prepared for the NGC/Express Secondary Schools Basketball League than some seasoned campaigners. San Juan’s Rafael Sorzano with a game-high 23 points and Marcus Charles with 15 points were the stars of the victory. Anxious to make a lasting first impression St Augustine’s Adam Mohammed and Jevon Casanova put their best foot forward and led their team’s scoring with ten and seven points respectively.

They showed promise for the future and a stoutness that augurs well for their team’s survival in the league. In the earlier match of the day’s double-header, St Joseph’s College trampled on St George’s College’s team morale when they beat the Barataria based outfit 58-10 on merit of 16 points from Tekron Basalo and Sheldon Nesbitt’s 12 points. St George’s College had Marcus Mitchell and Kareem Moses on the scorecard with four points each performances that can be attributed to off-season rust, if they persist then the team could find themselves in cellar position at the end of the regular season’s programme.

Today Manzanilla High School will make their debut in the East Zone Under-20 competition against the Youth Training Centre outfit. In the second match, Holy Cross College meet Sangre Grande Junior Secondary in the zone’s opening Under-15 fixture Maloney Indoor Sport Arena. In the North Zone, Mucurapo Senior Comprehensive take on Diego Martin Senior Secondary in the Girls Open Division; and Mucurapo play Fatima College in the Under-20 division at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo.
