Peace walk for murdered teen
SCORES OF persons came out to support the first Stellan Stephen Jamie Davis Memorial Walk yesterday around the Queen’s Park Savannah. The march was in memory of the slain Diego Martin teenager who was beaten, strangled and buried in a shallow grave late last year. It was organised by relatives and friends of the young murder victim to highlight the serious crime situation in the country.
Participants, dressed in white to symbolise peace, sang hymns during the memorial walk. Spokesperson for the Davis family, Marsha Brook, told Sunday Newsday the march was also in memory of victims of violent crimes. She said the Stellan Stephen Jamie Davis Memorial Walk would be an annual event. “We also intend to create a trust fund to help disturbed youths,” said Brooks; She said the Davis family and others are calling for the introduction of legislation which would make parents and guardians accountable for their troubled children. “Parents and guardians can’t walk away from their children. They have a responsibility to take care of them properly. I’m not against parents but the government needs to have a system in place to prevent, as far as possible, crimes being done by troubled youngsters,” she said.
