Baugh, Parchment smash hundreds

KINGSTON: Carlton Baugh and Brenton Parchment smashed hundreds for Jamaica to dominate Guyana’s bowling on the second day of their fourth round Carib Beer Series regional cricket match at Kensington Park yesterday. Parchment hit 100 and Baugh 100 not out as the Jamaicans piled up 410 for six declared, and Guyana reached 13 without loss in reply when bad light ended play early, with Krishna Arjune not out on nine and Ryan Ramdass on two. Baugh’s sixth First-Class hundred was a shot-filled show and Parchment crafted a solid maiden First-Class century, while half centuries from Dave Bernard (84) and captain Tamar Lambert (61) strengthened Jamaica’s position in the match that lost most of its first day to rain.

From an overnight 91 for two, the Jamaicans made good use of the protracted morning session — a 9.30 start to make up for time lost to rain on Thursday —  and consolidated the promising start they had on the opening day. Spinners Mahendra Nagamoo-too and Narsingh Deonarine gave their captain good spells but Parchment and Lambert played fluently and were hardly threatened on the Kensington Park pitch that offered consistent bounce and good conditions for batsmen applying themselves. Parchment, who captained the West Indies Under-19 unit —  that included subsequent Test players Devon Smith, Omari Banks, Carlton Baugh and Jermaine Lawson —  to the 2001 summer tour of England, played diligently after resuming at his overnight score of 51.

Parchment raced to his hundred with consecutive boundaries but departed immediately after when he attempted to drive a Deonarine delivery outside his off-stump and edged a catch to Neil McGarrell at slip. His knock lasted 251 minutes and 187 balls, laced with nine fours and a six — over long-on — on the opening day off Imran Jafferally. Baugh enjoyed himself with his trademark lusty hitting that belies his small size and counted seven fours and three sixes in a 114-ball innings that lasted 161 minutes.

The declaration came almost immediately after Baugh attained his hundred, and Daren Powell was left not out on one.  Deonarine was the chief wicket-taker for Guyana with four for 75 off 21 overs with two maidens, while his off-spinning partner Jafferally picked up two for 81 off 27 overs with five maidens. Arjune and Ramdass faced three overs before the close of play and the Guyanese start day three today 397 runs in deficit with all their wickets intact.
