Jamaica on verge of fourth straight victory

KINGSTON: Jamaica had Guyana struggling at 77 for the loss of five wickets, putting the host team on the verge of scoring their fourth straight win in the Carib Beer Series regional cricket tournament at Kensington Park yesterday. The Guyanese, who were bowled out for 191 in their first innings, need another 142 runs to make Jamaica bat again. Jamaica made 410 for six declared in their first innings.

The batsmen at the wicket are Assad Fudadin on 33 and Lennox Cush who is yet to score. The left-handed Fudadin, a West Indies “B” player, has so far struck three sixes. Guyana started their second innings shortly after tea and were in immediate trouble, losing Krishna Arjune who was caught and bowled by Darren Powell for nought with the score on three. Fastbowler Dwight Washington then removed Ryan Ramdass, who flicked off his legs to Nikita Miller for 10 when the score reached 20.  Narsingh Deonarine and Fudadin put on 41 runs for the third wicket before Deonarine was adjudged leg before wicket to medium-pacer David Bernard for 24. With his next ball, Bernard  bowled nightwatchman Trevon Garraway for nought. Sixteen runs later, Vishal Nagamootoo became Bernard’s third victim when he was caught behind by wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh for two.

Bernard has so far taken three wickets for five runs off  five overs. Starting the day at 13 without loss, Guyana struggled throughout their first innings and were bowled out just after tea. In the morning session, Powell rocked the top order by taking three of the four wickets to fall. He dismissed Ramdass for six, Fudadin for two and captain Damodar Daesrath for 14 while Washington removed Arjune for 10 as Guyana went to lunch at 92 for four with Deonarine on 44 and Cush on four. The Guyanese lost four more wickets in afternoon play including Deonarine for 45 and Cush for 10.
