Calypso Girls beaten, out C’wealth Games

TRINIDAD and Tobago “Calypso Girls” netballers hopes of qualifying for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, were dashed yesterday. The TT  netballers were beaten 53-51 in a thrilling match in Kingstown, St Vincent. The Vincentians who were held 45-45 at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo,  here at the 21st Caribbean Championships in July-August last, held a five-goal lead at the half-time interval. But the “Calypso Girls” netballers battled back determinedly to level the scores 39-39 at the end of the third period.

And according to manageress Martha Archer, they held their own until late in the match when the Trinidadians made a couple lapses, and lost their rhythm under the chants of the home crowd. Trinidad and Tobago, Canada and hosts St Vincent are playing off to fill the sole position from the Americas Federation of Netball Associations for the Games. Both the Trinidadians who take on Canada tomorrow and are expected to return home on Wednesday and St Vincent are expected to beat the Canadians.
