Workers have rights too
THE EDITOR: Please permit me to express the problems faced in the workplace. I worked at a gents store for the past few years. Imagine workers are not being told of their holidays before time. It’s like Friday for Monday. Workers used to get vacation with their money, now they do not. They now receive two weeks vacation without money until they return to work. I find this treatment to workers is distressing. People need their money. Most disappointing last week, workers were told that they will be getting paid fortnightly, because it is too much money to be paid weekly. So from February 15, 2005 this will come into effect.
Are workers not supposed to receive letters of these changes? Are workers not supposed to be told this months before? Workers who have been accustomed to being paid weekly will now have to wait two weeks to get paid. Is this against the law? We are workers who have families and bills to pay at a certain date. We are not supposed to be forced to accept or allow this kind of behaviour to continue. I am appealing to the relevant authorities to look after us at the workplace. I feel something ought to be done as soon as possible. I can no longer tolerate this kind of treatment.
