Sharon takes Couva Monarch title

SHARON HARVEY walked away with the $2,500 first prize in the Couva Calypso Monarch competition that was held on Saturday night at the Couva car park. Harvey, the 2002 winner, returned to capture the title with her rendition of “Take Time Out.” Her message sank home with a degree of intensity to which the crowd applauded lustily at the end of her performance.

In second place was Rondell Donawa whose song, “Young Messenger” was applicable to the process of nation building. Third place winner, Roger Johnson, who captured the crown at both Carapichaima and Chaguanas, last week, was strong in his rendition of “Mr Politician,”  with a topical stage presentation. However the judges thought that Harvey deserved the crown for 2005, in the competition which was held at the “Big Yard” in Couva.

The Junior Monarch title went to Jodelle Connel whose song, “Freedom”  went down tremendously well with the crowd. Second spot went to Shenise Simmons who rendered “Candles,” that could be seen at regular wakes in the country where murders occur with astonishing regularity. Calice Ann Williams took third place with “What Monkey See, Monkey Do.
