Ramdin’s 107 fails to save TT
NEW AMSTERDAM, Guyana: A maiden first-class century by Denesh Ramdin failed to save Trinidad and Tobago from heavy defat by Guyana in their sixth round Carib Beer Series match at Albion, yesterday. Set a target of 415 runs to win, Trinidad and Tobago were dismissed for 266 in their second innings, despite Ramdin’s dogged 107, to give the Guyanese victory by a handsome 148 runs. Only 35 minutes play were possible before the luncheon interval when Trinidad and Tobago reached 65 for three wickets, as early morning rain seeped under the covers.
The Trinidad and Tobago batsmen battled bravely to save the match and were 186 for six wickets at the tea interval. But their remaining four wickets were toppled by West Indies fast bowler Reon King who took four wickets for 78 runs. At the tea break, young Ramdin was on 76 not out, but the task of batting through until the end proved beyond him. Skipper Damodar Daesrath helped keep the pressure on the Trinidad and Tobago batsmen taking three wickets for 38, while leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo took two for 57.
The defeat was the third in a row for Trinidad and Tobago who won their first two matches against Leeward Islands and Barbados, after their opening match against Guyana at home was washed out by rain. The Trinidadians have now lost consecutive games to Jamaica, Windward Islands and Guyana.
Summarised scores: GUYANA 450 and 169/5 declared - Sewnarine Chattergoon 47, Narsingh Deonarine 40, Assad Fudadin 26 not out, Ramnaresh Sarwan 24, Rishi Bachan 3/69. TRINIDAD & TOBAGO 205 and 266 — Denesh Ramdin 107, Dwayne Bravo 40, Samuel Badree 31, Reon King 4/78, Damodar Daesrath 3/38, Mahendra Nagamootoo 2/57.
