Don’t legalise abortion

THE EDITOR: A letter appeared on February 9, stating that “our present criminal law does not prevent abortions nor really preserve the value of life.” Sad, but true. But then should we legalise the killing of unborn children because the law does not prevent it? What next? Shall we legalise drunken driving, kidnapping, theft, grand larceny, rape and murder? While it is true that acts of abortion continue even though the law is opposed to them, that is really no different than the situation where people are murdered in cold blood many a day in this country even though murder is a crime. Then there are the chemical killings, known today as “morning-after-pills,” a trend that is growing in the world even though many women and young girls have died as a result — and in countries where abortion is legal. With abortion against the law in TT, such chemicals cannot legally be sold.

Where those who rally for “choice” really amaze me is when a young woman died from just such a chemical abortion. They used this sad death to call for legalisation of abortion instead of asking for an investigation to find the pharmacist who would sell that deadly concoction. Indeed his was a criminal act that is punishable by law. Of course, that won’t stop some people, just as some people sell and others use illegal drugs in this country. However, in either case there is no justification for protecting acts that would do injury to citizens under the law — and unborn children being the most innocent and vulnerable citizens need our strong protection.

Yes, Delamo and Singing Sandra are right: Abortion is murder, and leaves behind a wounded mother who lives with the knowledge that she has murdered her own child. International Planned Parenthood Federation funds a local group to do their dirty work — peddling abortion to our nation. Once again I thank the Government of Trinidad and Tobago for being strong against this heavily bank-rolled lobby, that seeks to legalise abortion in our nation for their own monetary gain. And I thank God for the wonderful people of Trinidad and Tobago who have, over and over again said “No” to the legalisation of abortion in our nation and would rather seek ways to help women and their children.
