Indo-Trinidadian contributions
THE EDITOR: For a long time, Indo-Trinidadians believe that calypso singing is for Afro-Trinidadian. It was a surprise to see a girl of East Indian heritage winning the prison crown. She received a secondary education at Golden Grove penal institution. A lot of students started first form of high school at 15 years. Estina Bedasie started high school at 18 years or more. The Bedasie girl gave the nation youths some solid advice a few days before the last Carnival season.
There are a lot of people who possess talent, but never have the resources to develop it. Tishan Maraj is a national scholarship winner and plays cricket. I have seen this guy open the innings for the young West Indies cricket team. He is of Indo-Trinidadian heritage and put Pakistan’s youth team to think. This was the first time I saw a Pakistani cricketer show a sad face, while he was batting. His opening partner went on to play for the West Indies senior cricket team, who played just recently.
I believe that a lot of citizens know these talents, but cannot get to the avenues to express them. Are the resources, both financially and otherwise reaching people who cannot help themselves? In a sporting event, I tasted roti that was prepared by Laventille residents. Estina Bedasie winning a calypso crown and Tishan Maraj putting West Indies youth cricketers in a winning position should change people’s thinking. Finally, I would like to say congratulations to both individuals.
