Ramsammy calls for more youths in racing
A CALL for more youths to get involved in the horse racing industry was made yesterday by Trinidad and Tobago top rider Emile Ramsammy. He made the call at a news conference at level two of the Grand Stand of the Arima Race Club yesterday, to highlight tomorrow’s 10-race card. The globe-trotting jockey who is currently based at Woodbine racecourse in Canada pinpointed missing elements in the sport. Ramsammy whose career began 25 years ago has chosen to ride at home for one month.
He indicated that he had left home in 1990 and though he has been living and riding abroad, has appreciated the warmth shown by everyone since his arrival. During the festive season of Carnival, Ramsammy said he noticed most of the pan players were youths and said for racing to be successful efforts should be made to attract that same following. Tomorrow’s card will be seen as a marriage between horse racing and culture. It was so designed to celebrate the achievements of Ramsammy, and pay tribute to two greats in the steelband field, Ray Holman and Len “Boogsie” Sharpe.
An autograph session has been arranged for 10.45 am tomorrow, and between races four and six for Ramsammy to meet and greet friends and admirers. ARC president Gerard Ferreira said the marriage is a good one. He delved into the past and said the perception of the panyards and paddock were about the same. “They both suffered greatly but stood the test of time to rise above evil,” he said. Ferreira is of the opinion that not enough consideration is given to either by corporate citizens, and felt more assistance must come from them if they are to achieve excellence.
The ex-San Fernando Mayor said, “we are fortunate in having these three celebrities on one stage tomorrow.” And with conviction stated, “their presence will continue to build Santa Rosa Park as a family entertainment centre.” Holman, who is teaching aboard but is seen regularly at the park whenever he returns, and Sharpe said they felt humbled by the appreciation shown them. They see the marriage as challenging and historic and hope it would last. “There is no finer place to celebrate it, than at Santa Rosa Park and it’s fine surroundings,” said Holman.
