Caution on the nation’s roads

THE EDITOR: Signs and signals are the language of the road. Master this language, by giving the correct signals and in good time. When on the public highway, think about the job in hand, do not allow the mind to wander or be distracted by the things that are happening around. On any journey you can see drivers with one hand on the steering wheel using cell phones, or eating and drinking. I fear that all these activities could lead to accidents. Sometimes we look but fail to see other road users. Good observation is vital for road safety. How many of us could see as well as we did say five or even ten years ago?

Drive at a speed that will allow you to stop well within the distance you can see to be clear. Slow down on wet roads. Leave enough space between you and the vehicle in front, so that you can pull up safely if it suddenly slows down or stops. Never reverse from a side road into a main road. Avoid reversing into the road from a driveway, where possible, reverse in and drive out. The general conclusion is that as road users, we can all reduce the death and destruction on our roads by the simple application of concentration, observation, position and speed. Remember: too fast in this world — too early in the next.
