Young Jasper cops BEWIL golf

Mitchum Jasper warmed up for the 98th Trinidad and Tobago Open with his first victory in a TTGA Event on Sunday. He defeated the experienced Carlos “Sexy” Baynes in a play-off in the BEWIL sponsored Rudder/Alexander Invitational at the Chaguaramas Public Golf Course. Jasper shot the low round of the tournament 68 on Saturday to lead Baynes by six strokes on the first day. However, the country’s leading national player responded with a 69 on Sunday, while Jasper faltered with a score of 75. Both players registered scores of 143. This resulted in a play-off on the 18th hole, which Jasper birdied, after Baynes missed a seven-foot downhill putt. Kevin Ragoo took third place, five shots behind on 148.

Baynes and Jasper meet head-on over the first two days of the Trinidad and Tobago Open, as they are drawn together in the same group with a tee time of 9.32 am on Thursday. Defending TT Super Seniors Open Champion Pat Suraj showed he was in good form when he took the Over 60 Title at the BEWIL event beating Monty Chapman into second place by eight shots. Teenager Martine De Gannes won the women’s title with Amoy Chang Fong in second place. Arjoon Samlal copped the Seniors Over-50 Title, while Larry Sookram took first place in the Men’s First Flight. Veteran golf coach Victor Alexander was guest of honour at Sunday’s prize giving, which was also attended by Diane Dumas, General Manager of the Chagua-ramas Development Authority and Berry Ferdinand of the sponsors BEWIL.
