Jamaica whip the Windwards
ST ELIZABETH: A four-wicket burst from fastbowler Dwight Washington helped Jamaica to an innings and 37-run win over the Windward Islands yesterday, the third day of their Carib Beer Series regional cricket match at Alpart Sports Club. The Jamaicans ticked off their seventh win of the season 15 minutes before the close with one day remaining by routing the Windwards for 206 for nine. Last man Xavier Gabriel was unable to bat due to injury.
The Windwards ended the match with scores of 212 and 206 for nine against Jamaica’s 455. Washington took five wickets for 20 runs in the second innings to finish with match figures of nine wickets for 38 runs which earned him the “Man-of-the-Match” award. His last four wickets came after tea when he bowled Darren Sammy for 29, trapped Lyndon James leg before wicket for two and removed Shane Shillingford and Orlando Jackson for zero with successive deliveries.
The lanky Washington made the initial breakthrough when he had first innings centurion Devon Smith for 27 with the score on 38. Spinners Nikita Miller and Tamar Lambert both took two wickets. Jamaica won the six-team championship by defeating Barbados in the previous round. The hosts ended the series with 95 points and will meet the Leeward Islands in the Carib Beer Challenge final starting on Friday at Alpart. The Windwards ended in fifth position with 44 points.
Starting the day at 385 for four, Jamaica added 80 runs as Marlon Samuels — 130 overnight — went on to make 161. Carlton Baugh, who started the day on 76, was dismissed for 92. After their dismissal, wickets fell regularly and the hosts were all out 20 minutes before lunch. Bowling for the Windwards, left-arm medium pacer Deighton Butler, and spinners Shillingford and Jackson each finished with three wickets.
