Baptiste wins another Carifta gold for TT
KELLY-ANN BAPTISTE added to the Trinidad and Tobago medal haul when she sprinted to gold in the women 200 metres at the Junior Carifta Games at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago, yesterday. Baptiste clocked a time of 23.25 seconds ahead of Jamaica’s Anneisha McLaughlin in 23.28 and Grenada’s Sherry Fletcher 24.03. But Marcus Duncan had to settle for a bronze in the men equivalent when he was time in 21.64 seconds in the event won by Daniel Bailey of Antigua and Barbuda, with Jamaica’s Mekel Downer getting the silver in 21.49.
Trinidad and Tobago finished the three-day games with 33 medals which included ten gold. Kerticha John also secured bronze in the women 800 metres in a time of two minutes 13.03 seconds. John got home way behind winner Snany Eugene of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) in her time of 2:12.75 while Jamaica’s Bobby-Gaye Wilkins was runner-up.
Trinidad and Tobago won gold in the women 4x400 metres, and also won the under-17s 4x400 metres relay, while Rhonda Watkins won gold in thge women high jump under-20 with a leap of 1.82 metres. However the host failed to impress in the men’s 800 metres with favourites Jamaal James finishing a disappointing seventh in two minutes flat. The race was won by Ramon Miller of Bahamas in a quick one minute and 54.53 seconds and he was followed by countryman Codero Charles in one minute 54.86 seconds.
The Jamaicans also secured gold medals in the 100 metres hurdles for boys under-17 as well as the boys under-20. Among the under-17s Keiron Stewart claimed the top spot with a time of 13.41, while the boys 100 metres hurdles went to Latoya Greaves in a blistering time of 13.82 seconds. Jamaica also copped the 110 metres hurdles for under-20 boys through Markino Buckley in 14.34 seconds.
