Bring the breathalyser on now

THE EDITOR: As the slaughter continues on the nation’s roads, I do not understand how our law-makers cannot see the need for implementing the use of breathalyser testing on drivers. The police has repeatedly told us that drunk driving accounts for nearly half of road accidents. The stupid notion that “Trinis could hold dey liquor” is put to rest by the cold hard facts. So why in heavens name have we done nothing to reduce this behaviour? Could it be that the big businesses that produce and market alcoholic drinks are blocking the use of the breathalyser?

I cannot believe that they are so callous and mercenary. My research on the internet shows that in most states of the United States you are only considered too intoxicated to drive if your blood level reaches .08 percent. This would allow an average 180 pound male to consume as much as four beers in an hour and a half period without being considered legally intoxicated. Surely at this rate of consumption the alcohol marketers should be satisfied that they would be able to stuff their fat pockets with enough money and still ensure that we do not have a bunch of drunken crazy drivers butchering people on our roadways.

As a nation all of us must make our voices heard on this issue. What are we waiting for? When one of our children, nieces or nephews or close friend is killed or maimed by a drunk driver it will be too late. All the wailing and mourning at a grave side or hospital bed will be of no use then. Let our voices be heard now and stop the carnage. The politicians will only act if we the people speak. If we do not speak then we have given our silent consent to the madness that brings so much pain and suffering throughout the length and breadth of this land.
