Why fuss over cricket

THE EDITOR: My question is: How did cricket become the mentality of a supposedly intelligent nation? In all the recent furores about cricket, I wonder if a concerted effort is being made to divert the Trini mentality from Carnival to cricket. If that is so, to what purpose? Let us see here, in Carnival people strip themselves nine-tenths naked and prance around like primitive people for other people to see. It is not to say that the Government has suppressed the playing of music in a public place or banned dancing in any place. However, we see at Carnival supposedly respectable people behaving like Org and his caveman clan. One gets the impression that this is their one and only chance to enjoy song and dance in their lives.

In cricket now, the sport is descending into a cat fight. Then there are the sponsors who feel that they can throw their money about and own people into the bargain. In both cases the only common factor is the money-making one. So business wise it is unwise to replace one with another. To tell the truth I haven’t got the least bit of energy to show an interest in cricket and even less to give to Carnival. For my part, both can take a hike. TV6 is constantly shoving it down our throats like it or not, but I guess that the ones who like the game are more vociferous than lil ol’ me when it comes to getting their own way. And then again what excuse would the civil servants have for not doing the jobs they are paid to do.

The government would do well to heed my advice and start salary negotiations at the height of any cricket controversy. But when I hear supposedly grown, mature men constantly behave like cry babies about the second and most boring game in the world next to golf, I say “mass day ent done yet,” and I get darned vex. No doubt, sane people would wonder if there is no other game in the world to play and fuss over. It says a lot for the sheep mentality that most people suffer from; ask the Bible people. They think it is vogue to go with the flow and not make any attempt to be original and speak their minds.
