Connection shut out Stars 4-0

BRAZILIAN midfielder Gefferson Goulart netted a second-half hat-trick yesterday as W Connection inflicted a 4-0 thrashing on champions North East Stars in an ill-tempered 2005 T&T Pro League opener. The crowd at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva were in a jubilant mood after seven minutes when striker Andre Toussaint converted a penalty kick.

Goulart held centre stage in the second half, netting in the 67th, 75th and fourth minute of stoppage time, to seal the win for the "Savonetta Boys."

But referee Ted Gordon was forced to expel North East Stars’ defender Abassi McPherson for violently kicking an opponent in the 76th. Gordon also dished out six yellow cards — for Connection Jose Luis Seabra (15th), Toussaint (26th), David Atiba Charles (72nd) and Kendall Davis (77th) and, for North East, Glenton Wolfe (sixth) and Anthony Wolfe (ninth).

In the day’s other encounter, CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh played to a goalless draw with Caledonia AIA/Fire at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.
