Sancho, Roberts score in UK
LONDON: Grenadian striker Jason Roberts continued to energise Wigan Athletics’ dreams of a Premiership berth next summer when he scored to give the Championship side a 2-0 win over Cardiff yesterday. He was among several Caribbean players who got on the scoresheet in the football leagues throughout Britain. The pacy 27-year old hitman, who has already netted 19 times in the League, buried a near-post header from Stephen McMillan’s cross in the 51st minute to give the North West England club the lead, after both teams had failed to find the back of the nets in the first half. Alan Mahon sealed the game on 86 minutes after Graham Kavanagh delivered a cross to his feet in the penalty area and he finished clinically. Wigan now lie second in the Championship standings with 79 points, five adrift of leaders Sunderland. Trinidad and Tobago’s Brent Sancho also found his scoring touch for Dundee as they beat Dunfermline Athletic 2-1 in the Scottish Premier League. Sancho was in the right place at the right time to direct a Steve Lovell through-ball past the goalkeeper from ten yards out to break the 1-1 deadlock in the 62nd minute. Meanwhile, Reggae Boy Barry Hayles was on target as his Millwall pulled off a sensational late victory over Crewe, winning 4-3 in a high scoring affair. Hayles’ fine finish gave Millwall the lead in the 27th minute when he received a pass from Josh Simpson, controlled the ball expertly, before sliding it past the Crewe custodian. Marvin Elliot added another from close range four minutes after the resumption and Jody Morris hit a third less than a minute later to give Millwall a 3-0 lead. Kenny Lunt (62nd), Steve Jones (68th) and Luke Varney (81st) gave Crewe hope as they drew even but Ben May’s penalty in the 85th settled the issue. St Kitts striker Calum Willock also scored to keep his relegation-threatened Peterborough in League One for at least another week as they beat Blackpool 1-0 in a gutsy display. Willock was on target in the 42nd minute, blasting home a left footed effort after the goalkeeper had parried an initial shot on goal. Peterborough are one from the bottom of the table and seemed destined for relegation. (CMC)
