Coach King agrees with WI skipper

WEST INDIES coach Bennett King blamed his batsmen for letting down the team in the second Digicel Test match which they lost by eight wickets at the Queen’s Park Oval yesterday. West Indies scored 347 and 194, to which South Africa replied with 398 and 146 for two wickets. The fourth day’s play proved crucial in the ultimate determination of the match result.

After dismissing South Africa for 398 and conceding a lead of 51 runs, West Indies frontline batsmen especially Wavell Hinds (22), Brian Lara (4), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (1), Donovan Pagon (2) went in rapid succession in with only 13 runs added from 79 to 92.And it was Ramnaresh Sarwan (93 not out) and Dwayne Bravo (30 not out), steadied the side at closed that day at 170 for five.

King suggested that there was no one defining moment in the match which contributed to the team’s defeat but felt that "the result was anti-climatic." Comment on the Windies first Test defeat under his tenure, he said:

"Some things happened on the first day and then on the fourth day which contributed. But there is no one defining moment."He pointed out that shot selection by some of the more established batsmen would have made the difference in West Indies losing the initiative. King also felt that the no-ball problem is cause for concern and said, "the no-ball cost us more in this match.

"There were no no-balls in the training. But during the game, the bowlers changed the tempo and their rhythm, especially when they change from over the wicket to around the wicket. It is something you can’t control," added King who is on his first Test series assignment with the West Indies team. He, however, praised some of his players without naming any by stressing that, "a couple of people have learnt a lot in the short space of time that I have been with the team."
