Accused Bonadie shooter joins judicial review

A policeman who is said to be responsible for the shooting of Galene Bonadie was given permission by a judge to join the judicial review proceedings filed by attorney Ravi Rajcoomar, who is attempting to stop the coroner from calling him as a witness in the inquest. Justice Nolan Bureaux granted leave on Tuesday to PC Brian Phillips on the grounds that Phillips’ interest will not be adequately served if he does not intervene in the judicial review proceedings. At the coroner inquest into the shooting of Bonadie, Chief Magistrate Sherman Mc Nicolls, sitting as coroner, heard evidence that Rajcoomar, one of the attorneys seeking the interests of the Bonadies, had taken statements from witnesses.

Lead attorney for Phillips, Israel Khan SC, called for Rajcoomar to testify to this effect, and Mc Nicolls agreed. Rajcoomar responded by filing judicial review proceedings to stop Mc Nicolls’ decision. Phillips, through his attorneys Ulric Skerritt and Deborah James, stated that while Mc Nicolls was adequately represented in the proceedings, and Mc Nicolls’ interests are separate and distinct, Phillips needed to intervene since he was one of the officers whose conduct was called into question, and since he was the officer identified as the person who shot Bonadie causing her death.
