Beenhakker focus on team unity

NEW Trinidad and Tobago football coach Leo Beenhakker will focus on team unity, rather than individual play. The 62-year-old Dutchman will try to rekindle the “Warriors” hopes of qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Germany. Beenhakker was hired to replace Tobago-born Bertille St Clair who was having his second go-around as national coach. He will be at the helm for the first time when Trinidad and Tobago meet Panama in Port-of- Spain on June 4. And on June 8, Trinidad and Tobago play Mexico in Mexico City.

Meanwhile, national skipper Dwight Yorke who is set to leave Premiership team Birmingham City for Sydney, has been described by the club’s owner David Sullivan as “a straggler.” Sullivan said he will be happy to see Yorke leave his club. Yorke, scorer of 122 career goals in the English Premiership, seventh highest in history, has been on the move since leaving Manchester United. He went from Aston Villa to United, then was shipped to Blackburn and later Birmingham.

Onandi Lowe is back in his native Jamaica from England, after being cleared of drug charges. And he scored the only goal for Arnett Gardens to beat Village United 1-0. Two Jamaicans are in Trinidad until November as members of Joe Public in the National Super League. Both Denzil Watson a striker and Adrien Mitchell a defender, will play in the NSL and are expected to return to Jamaica in November.
