National Awards for aircraft crew

THE EDITOR: I wish to publicly hail and applaud the heroic efforts of Captain Daniel Kawall, his co-pilot Barri Sadeek and air hostess Ms Harripersad for their successful management of probably the most dangerous air-crisis that this country can contemplate. The nation owes these three people a debt equivalent to the value of no less than 46 lives — priceless as it is immeasurable. Can you imagine what would have happened if Captain Daniel had faltered in his “textbook precise” procedures? Can you imagine the grief of this country had any life been lost on board that Danish 8 aircraft? These people have placed an indelible act of heroism, professionalism, compassion and care for their charges on the country’s history books.

In addition, future pilots and aircraft crew will now study the procedure executed by Captain Daniel ie his efforts to get the gear down, his approach to the runway as well as the navigational efforts of Mr Sadeek in their training exercises. While no one can prevent accidents, we now know that there are skilled and experienced personnel who will do whatever is necessary in such an event. We must also not forget Ms Harripersad, the air hostess who had the unenviable responsibility for preparing obviously terrified and petrified passengers on board for what could have been their last moments.

Indeed, we cannot discount her efforts since she contributed significantly to pacifying and calming the passengers while the pilot was free to concentrate on bringing the aircraft down. Easily, she could have been the last face many of the passengers would have seen if things did not go picture perfect. Well done Ms Harripersad. I pray that deities in heaven will convey continued blessings and guidance to you and all persons who travel through our skies. In this regard, I wish to submit, in advance, a recommendation of a national award (Hummingbird or Chaconia) to the aircraft crew. I trust the Prime Minister’s office has taken note of the instrumental role of the flight crew, notwithstanding the fact that neither the Prime Minister nor any member of his Cabinet excepting Franklin Khan, took the time to thank Captain Daniel.
