Senior cop’s tirade disgraceful

THE EDITOR: "To Protect and Serve" are very powerful words linked on to the Police Service in TT. However, I must say that it’s very sad to know that some of the senior officers in the service are damaging the reputation of the Police Service gradually and something needs to be done to save the service as soon as possible.

Recently I walked into the Tunapuna Police Station to lodge a complaint and as I stood by the desk, I was distracted by the sound of verbal abuse coming directly from inside of the police station. I turned to the direction the sound was coming from and I was in total shock to see a senior officer abusing and insulting some junior officers on duty in public. He was in full uniform as well as those being abused. I stood there in total anger and disappointment as I listened to how the man was addressing those under him, he was actually using direct obscene language.

It is indeed a total shame and disgrace for the public to witness such an incident within the police service. I felt sorry how the juniors were treated in public because it is very unfair to them and they are not supposed to be insulted in public neither behind closed doors. They are all role models in society who should be given full respect and treatment even if it’s an SRP, Regular Police, Inspector, Corporal, Sergeant, Superintendent, etc.

But what was even worse was that I had mentioned what had happened in the police station to my neighbours and they told me that this is not the first time something like that has happened. Many of them personally admitted that they have witnessed the same officer abusing and insulting his junior officers very often at any place at any time. I plead to the Minister of National Security and the Commissioner of Police to investigate this matter and deal with it as soon as possible.
