Ramnarine hunts Women’s World Boxing title
TOP local female boxer Ria Ramnarine is confident of winning the 105 pound Women’s’ Interna-tional Boxing Association (WIBA) mini-flyweight World title when she squares off against American opponent Yvonne Caples, on Saturday May 28, at the Jean Pierre Complex, Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain. “I’ve been waiting on this opportunity for a long time and I’m confident about winning the title and claiming what is mine,” the local pugilist told Newsday yesterday at Ma Pau Members’ Club, Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook.
“It’s all a mind game, she has two hands and two legs and I have the same things. I have been training hard. I’ll also be employing every technique I’ve learnt to win this fight,” an ultra-confident Ramnarine added. The local boxer currently holds the Ibero-American Mini-Flyweight Championship and is ranked number three by the WIBA, while Caples is ranked one place higher.
Ramnarine said Caples is a southpaw (left hander) and consequently, her coach and manager Bharath Ramoutar has employed mainly southpaw sparring partners during Ramnarine’s training. The athletically built Ramnarine is based at the Fine Line Gym, Chaguanas, but has also been doing extra work at the Cosmic and Sand City Boxing Gyms in Marabella. Her record currently stands at seven wins, two losses and one no contest and her opponent’s record is seven wins, seven losses and two draws. “I just want to get through with this fight and then move on from there,” said a confident Ramnarine.
