Motherhood about tough but unconditional love

THE EDITOR: Mother is defined as: “a female parent,” “that which is the origin of something.” But as we all (should) know, a mother represents so much more than this vague definition. To be a mother, particularly in these times, a woman must showcase her strength, resourcefulness, prowess against adversaries and deep-seeded love for her child. Motherhood is not to be taken lightly, since it is not merely a question of bearing a child, it is about lifelong commitment to responsibility. Society has borne witness to the ill effects of a child who never knew the love and care of a parent, especially a mother.

I admittedly was unaware of the full extent of the role, no duties, of being a mother, until I became pregnant. My present “state” has caused me to investigate my relationship with my mother. And I have realised that through the years certain words were omitted from conversations with her. Words of appreciation, admiration and gratitude. Memory permits me to recall the times when through my foolish rebellious actions I hurt my mother. The “growing pain” years were not only difficult for me but also by extension, mother. Yet my fumbling did not deter my mother from hugging me and showing me she cared. I understand through my mother’s love the true meaning of loving unconditionally.

So mom, thank you for the “licks” and “the eye” that kept me in line. Thank you for providing the space to develop as an individual, yet not staying too far off in case I needed your assistance. I appreciate the talks about life’s matters and always having your ear at listening alertness when I was in my talkative mood. As I stare anxiously down the road to motherhood reality stares back at me. The realisation that there would be times when the burdens of life would be too much to carry but you have to tuck your child safely in bed before you are allowed to weep. Only to rise next morning to prepare him/her for school. Moments when tough love and discipline would be required. Then the special times where you can look at your child and smile, dropping everything and embracing that being and without words relay “I love you.”

So to all mothers who have journeyed this path and are now spectators watching your child now managing motherhood, thank you. To the ones whose tireless efforts afforded society another positive thinking, morally and spiritually grounded, ambitious individual, the world applauds you. For the ones who are struggling I urge you not to give up the fight against criminal minds for your child’s soul. To the young mothers, especially my sister Stephonne, my past co-workers Stacey, Nita, Genieve, Lyndie, may you have continued strength and wisdom on this journey. And to you, mom, thank you for not relinquishing your duties, for your support, strength, love and for every moment shared. Happy Mother’s day.
