Doctors, not police should stop Sharma
THE EDITOR: I write to suggest that it is the duty of his doctors, not the police to prevent MP Chandresh Sharma from trying to enter Parliament on Friday. Mr Sharma’s frailty is a matter of public record. Indeed, it is also a matter of Parliamentary Record, having been read into Hansard by Kamla Bissessar, and a doctor — MP Dr Fuad Khan. Those who care to remember should recall Kamla’s description of the hapless Mr Sharma, when she and Dr Khan almost carried the poor man for medical attention following an argument Mr Sharma had with Keith Rowley.
The concerns she expressed at the time led some of us to wonder if Mr Rowley might soon have been charged with something serious — like manslaughter. Has Mr Sharma’s blood pressure been brought under sufficient control to face the possibility of arrest and incarceration? The police, must of course, be careful how they handle the man. All of you were against the police for not forcibly removing Mr Sharma — as their predecessors had done with Albert Gomes.
But remember, these police attend Parliament, and they would have remembered Mrs Bissessar’s description of Mr Sharma’s condition over the “teacup incident.” It was concern for Mr Sharma’s health — as Sparrow would say “that’s all” that kept them from removing him. Of course, one wonders why, if she believes what she said in Parliament about Sharma’s condition that day, Kamla is now encouraging poor Mr Sharma to attend Parliament. Martyrs should be made of sterner stuff!
