Alexander wins OWTU/Rienzi Classic
JOSHUA ALEXANDER of Team Trek sped past the finish line first in the Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU) 5th Annual Rienzi Classic on Sunday in San Fernando. The awards ceremony for the event will be held at the OWTU Office at Royal Road at 5pm on July 9. The event which was held in commemoration of the Labour Day celebrations, started in front the OWTU Offices on Royal Road, where the riders first assembled, before they went along their 49.3 mile journey. Alexander led for the entire race as the riders proceeded through Rousillac, La Brea, Point Fortin, Cap-de-Ville, Erin, Buenos Aires and other surrounding areas. Christopher Gill gave chase early, along with Colin Wilson, Guy Costa, David Alves and Shannon Metivier, but none could catch Alexander, to the delight of the large gathering watching the race. Costa (Rafmon Mecalfab) finished runner-up while Joshua’s brother Adam, also of Team Trek claimed third. Christopher was fourth in the event with Wilson fifth and Team Trek’s Alves, finishing behind in sixth. Among the juniors it was Dariel Perreira of Southclaine who disposed of his challengers to win and take home the top prize. Marc Codrington (PL Singh Sonics) finished second and Gustavo Jacobs (Trinity Wheelers) third. Mark Thomas of Madonna was first among the veterans 40-years and over. He got the better of a large field which included Joel Brown of Arima Wheelers. Brown was the eventual runner-up, while Arnold Fonrose was third. In the 50 and over category, Kent Luces (PL Singh Sonics) was first to the line. He was followed by Orlando Frontin of Southclaine and Mark Massiah (Hummingbird Wheel-ers).
