Phoenix in early Super League lead
LEANDRO WILLIAMS netted a double as Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix whipped Media 21 FC 3-1 at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima, in the opening round of the Sportsworld Super League yesterday. M&M Harvard were the other winners up to press time last night, by a 1-0 margin over WASA Clean & White at WASA Ground, St Joseph. And the Tobago-based club jumped to the lead of the standings by virtue of goal difference, before last night’s doubleheader at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, which saw Couva Players United versus Maraval Youth Academy and defending champs, the ‘Eastern Lions’ Joe Public, against Superstar Rangers. At Arima, Williams put Phoenix 2-0 up with a quick pair, in the 11th and 20th minutes, before Junior Waldron reduced the deficit to 2-1 with a 47th minute strike. All hopes of a Media 21 FC comeback were dashed however, when Rackley Joseph got Phoenix’s third in the 73rd. Harvard had to wait until the 81st minute, to break down WASA’s defence in St Joseph, with Kerston Fraser the goalgetter, while Crab Connection and PLIPDECO Caroni earned 2-2 drawn results against Police and Stokely Vale respectively. At Gilbert Park, Couva, Kyle Cupid put Caroni ahead in the 28th before the balance shifted to Stokely Vale’s favour with goals from Warren Phillip (69th) and Darren Williams (70th). But the Tobago lads were unable to secure full points, as Cupid got the equaliser four minutes from fulltime. A similar storyline occurred in the Crab-Police battle at Bourg Mulatresse, San Juan, with Jason Sampson putting Crab in front after eight minutes before the lawmen responded with two strikes from Kareem Joseph (58th) and Jason Boodram (61st). Police’s joy were shortlived as Marvin Oliver levelled the scores in the 64th.
