A Father’s Day wish comes true

FREED attorney Jagdeo Singh, who walked out of the Maximum Security Prison at Golden Grove on Thursday night, spent all of Friday and yesterday getting to know his three-year-old daughter, Priya, whom he saw on only four occasions while he was incarcerated.

Singh and his common-law wife Aruna Mohammed spent time alone with their daughter at their Aranjuez Villas apartment, and only left briefly on Friday afternoon to pray at a nearby Hindu temple.

A slim looking Singh, who has been in prison since 2001, said the best gift he got was being freed just days before Father’s Day. He said he intended to get to know his daughter, as he was in jail when she was born.

"I cannot describe this joy . . . this joy of being reunited with Priya and Aruna, is indescribable," said Singh. He added that the hardest thing about being in jail was being without his daughter, and he said he intended to make up for the lost time.

Singh said he gave legal advice to prisoners and was happy to provide that service. He has no immediate plans for the future, but is hoping to spend all of his time with Aruna and Priya.

He was high in praise of Aruna, who he said stood by him and never lost faith that one day he would be freed.

A beaming Aruna told Sunday Newsday she is also at a loss for words, and cannot explain the joy of having Singh at home.

The 90.5 radio talk show host said Priya is elated at having "Daddy" at home, and Singh cannot take his eyes off his little "princess."

Singh said he will reveal more about his stay in prison and other sensitive issues, but needed to have dialogue with his attorneys before doing so.

Singh was convicted of corruptly soliciting $40,000 from Sherry Ann Basdeo, the wife of a client, between October and December 1999. He was arrested in a sting operation at the Curepe KFC outlet on December, 2, 1999. Singh’s appeal to the Privy Council was heard over two days, and the five lawlords delivered their judgment on Thursday. Their reasons for the judgment will come at a later date.
