14-month-old baby killed by reported cocaine addict

A 14-month-old baby was killed yesterday after a reported cocaine addict crawled into the child’s bedroom, picked up the infant and slammed him continuously on the concrete floor.

Baby Josiah Mohammed of Caratal Road, Gasparillo, was pronounced dead on arrival at the San Fernando General Hospital.

Police have since arrested a suspect from the area.

Josiah’s distraught father Fareed Mohammed told police that around noon he put his son to sleep and left him on the bed. Mohammed said he went outside and left the child in the care of his mother-in-law and seven-year-old son.

A police report stated that the addict scaled a wall and entered the building through a window leading to the baby’s bedroom.

The suspect reportedly lifted the sleeping child and began slamming him on the ground.

The baby’s cries alerted the mother-in-law who ran into the bedroom just in time to see the suspect fleeing the scene.

The baby’s head was covered in blood as he laid unconscious on the ground. The mother-in-law’s screams alerted Mohammed who was still outside. When he rushed into the bedroom he saw his bloody baby on the ground.

An EHS ambulance rushed the baby to hospital but the child was pronounced dead on arrival.

An autopsy is due to be performed today at the Forensic Science Centre. Gasparillo police are continuing investigations.
