Weston chases world title in France
TT’s Iva "Fighting School Girl" Weston will be trading punches on July 9 with France’s Myriam Lamare in a ten-round, 140-pound Women Light-Welterweight Wor-ld Boxing Championship title fight in Paris, France. A fit and confident Weston told Newsday she was ready to beat her opponent and take the title in Lamare’s hometown. "I feel good and I’ve been training hard running, sparring, skipping, doing push-ups, pull-ups and lots of hand pad work," she said. She started learning the "sweet science" as a form two school girl under boxing trainer Fitzroy Richards at the Siparia-based White Eagle Boxing Gym. Richards has remained as her trainer ever since, helping her become better and better in the fistic art. Weston, 19, (ten wins, two losses) and Richards will be travelling to France on July 4 and will be returning on either July 10 or 11. Lamare’s record stands at ten wins, ten ko’s, no losses and she is known to be a hard punching brawler. Richards said Weston will be using her slick, scientific boxing techniques to defeat her opponent’s brawling style. "She’ll be using lots of lateral movement and foot speed," he said, "while hooking off her left jab and pounding Lamare with right crosses. She’d also be exploiting any defensive weaknesses she sees in her rival." Richards revealed that Weston is quick and has a good ring defence because she has never been knocked out. Her matchmaker Buxo Potts said she has never been a sheltered fighter and has fought all of the best female fighters in her weight class. "She has never looked for favours from judges and referees. Furthermore, her only two career losses have been to world ranked contenders," he stated. If all goes well, TT might soon have another world boxing champion in Weston.
