Brilliant Baptiste does Sagicor double
KELLY ANN BAPTISTE completed the double at the Sagicor National Senior Track and Field Championship at the Hasely Crawford Stadium when she sprinted to the gold medal in the Women Open Division 200 metres yesterday. Like the day before, Baptiste faced a strong field, many of whom she may have been admiring earlier in her career. But the Zenith sprinter showed her 100 metres triumph was no fluke, when she sped to victory in 22.94 seconds, well ahead of second place finisher Ayana Hutchinson. Hutchinson of Phoenix also impressed the crowd with an excellent performance for the silver medal in a time of 23.35 seconds. The rising talent among the women in local athletics Monique Cabral put in a splendid performance to earn bronze in 23.87 seconds. Aaron Armstrong, son of ex-national sprinter Ainsley Armstrong captured the gold medal much to the delight of the crowd that gathered at the venue in Mucurapo. The Rebirth athlete clocked 19.98 seconds for the victory after outclassing another strong field in the half-lap event. Armstrong who is based in the United States, returned home to show his worth at the Championships. Julien Raeburn, another United States-based athlete was second in 20.54 seconds and the silver medal went to Kevin Pierre of Rebirth in 20.55 seconds. Sheridan Kirk won the Men 800 metres in one minute, 46.40 seconds. The Zenith athlete was the overwhelming favourite going into the race, and did not disappoint. The impressive Jameel James (Quantum) stormed home second in 1:51.98, while Jieutonne Archer was third in 1:52.35 seconds. Among the women in-form Melissa DeLeon won the 800 metres in 2:04.09 seconds ahead of Rasta hair-styled Pilar McShine (Success/La-ventille) in 2:15.46 and Afiya Walker (Burnley) was third in 2:20.04.
