Justice Lucky’s report by mid-July
JUSTICE Anthony Lucky, chairman of a West Indies Cricket Board-appointed committee investigating the sponsorship of West Indies cricket by Digicel, hinted his report could be handed in by mid-July. He said this yesterday, prior to another meeting at Accra Beach Hotel, Babados tomorrow. Justice Lucky said, his committee was in the process of collating written evidence and "putting everything together as we are trying to have the formal presentation of the report by the middle of July." To date, the committee which comprise Justice Lucky, Antiguan accountant Avondale Thomas, and Gregory Georges have held six tele-conferences and have met twice in Antigua and once here when outgoing WICB president Teddy Griffith was interviewed. In Barbados, Justice Lucky and his team will be interviewing Tony Marshall, Austin Clarke of Cable & Wireless, and Stephen Alleyne. Both Marshall and Alleyne were on the executive committee and were associated with the WICB Marketing Committee when the board negotiated the Digicel contract. After tomorrow’s meeting in Barbados, the committee is expected to meet again in Trinidad, and later in Jamaica where they will interview Chris Dehring, Simon Coskell and Dave Cameron. Among persons already interviewed are, Teddy Griffith, Cable & Wireless’ Lisa Agard, C&W marrketing officer Darren Millien, Barry Thomas, and WICB chief executive officer Roger Braithwaite. But Justice Lucky pointed out they still have to complete their interview with Braithwaite. The Committee willl also be meeting with Dinanath Ramnarine and his West Indies Players’ Association. For 20 years, Cable &Wireless were sponsors of West Indies cricket until Digicel took over. And this Digicel sponsorship caused a big rift in the West Indies team when it was discovered, prior to the AB Australian tour in January, six players including star batsman Brian Lara were contracted to C&W. Justice Lucky’s committee has been mandated to scrutinise all correspondence, transactions, communications, minutes, contracts, records, arrangements and other relevant documents concerning the negotiations for the renewal of sponsorship arrangement with C&W and the negotiations and conclusion of the sponsorship arrangement with Digicel. The committee will also determine whether the WICB and all their organs acted appropriately and in particular, to determine allegations that the WICB treated C&W fairly or whether an improper relationship exists between WICB and Digicel and if the new sponsorship arrangement was in the best interests of the WICB and continued cricket development in the West Indies.
