37,000 wrote National Test

THE Ministry of Education yesterday said everything went "smoothly" with the National Test, which was taken by 37,000 students in 544 public and private primary schools.

The Standards One and Three students wrote the test in Mathematics and Language Arts. It began promptly at 8.30 am with both subjects lasting 75 minutes with a 15-minute break between the two, during which the children were provided with a snack from the school feeding programme.

The test results will be analysed to compare the performance of students in the various education districts, but it does not indicate a pass or fail for the students.

The aim of the assessment is to "gather information for decision-making at the school, district and national levels, identify areas of the system that require further investigation, identify national norms, compare students’ performance by school and educational districts and track students’ progress in schools."

The test was originally constructed and administered to students in Standards 1-4.
