Peru win Optimist team sailing title


PERU claimed the team title while hosts Trinidad and Tobago had to settle for fourth spot in the 2005 Optimist North American Championships at Store Bay, Tobago, yesterday.


Under the team format, two teams faced off in a series of sailing events with the country with the lowest score advancing to the next phase. And, in the final, Peru whipped Bermuda 12-24 to claim the trophy.


Trinidad and Tobago put up a brave fight against Mexico, but the Central Americans prevailed 17-19 for third spot. In the fifth flight (round) under beautiful skies and on peaceful waters, TT thrashed Puerto Rico 10-26 while the Mexicans edged Argentina 16-20. The local squad handed United States B a 13-23 whipping in the fourth flight while Mexico took care of the American C squad 14-22.


And, in the first set of races on the day, the third flight, TT cruised past Bermuda ‘B’ 12-27, USA B crushed the French Antilles 10-26, Bermuda A whipped Argentina 14-22, Peru edged Puerto Rico 15-21, USA C hammered Brazil 14-28 and the Mexicans trounced USA A 14-22. Action reverts to the individual format today, from 10.30 am.
