Four killed — one victim murdered in toilet
A 34-year-old fruit vendor, an unidentified man, a shopkeeper, and a man police described as a "menace to society," were murdered between Friday afternoon and early yesterday in Laventille, Santa Cruz and Carenage. Reports revealed that around 8.30 pm on Thursday, Carenage shop keeper Leo Chin, was walking to his home in the company of his wife Molly in the vicinity of Baird Street, Carenage, when they were confronted by a man who snatched Molly’s purse. Chin recognised the man and asked him why he did it. Chin was then shot once in the chest by the gunman who fled the scene. The 65-year-old shopkeeper was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he died around 3 pm on Friday. Then, around 6.10 pm on Friday, officers of the Inter Agency Task Force responded to a report of a shooting at Tillbury Place, Laventille. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man lying in a pool of blood. He was said to be about six feet tall, of African descent and in his late twenties. The man was barely alive and was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he died around 7 pm. Up until late yesterday, the man remained unidentified. The killings continued yesterday when Abraham Gay, 29, of Red Hill, Morvant was found dead in the toilet of a Cantaro, Santa Cruz pub. Reports revealed that around 12.30 am, a single gunshot was heard at the Firehouse Pub where a party was in progress. A check was made and Gay’s body was discovered. Gay was described as a suspect in several shootings and murders. He was also described by police as a menace to society. Also around 5.30 am yesterday, Richard Isaac, 34, a father of one, left his Sogra Trace, Laventille home to purchase fruits at the Central Market. On reaching a short distance away, he was shot once and he fell into a drain. Erica Coppin, the 24-year-old wife of the murder victim said yesterday that her husband always kept his cash in his underpants to avoid being robbed. She speculates that the person who killed her husband wanted to rob him and when he found no cash, he shot Isaac dead. The grieving woman revealed that her husband sold fruits at South Quay in Port-of-Spain, and was not involved in any gang-related activities.
