TT boys, girls beaten in junior b-ball

TRINIDAD and Tobago boys and girls were looking for a change of fortune last night, after both teams went down to defeat in their opening matches of this year’s 5th Caribbean Junior Basketball Championship at the University of the West Indies Sports and Physical Education Centre, St Augustine Campus, on Saturday evening.

The local girls were humiliated by a powerful Puerto Rican outfit 87-33 while the men were edged 55-51 in the United States Virgin Islands.

Puerto Rico got a game high 22 points from Pamela Rosado, while colleague Yarilis Escalera added 14 in the well deserved victory.

But the local lads got 12 points apiece from skipper Kensley Sandy and Jamille King in a determined display, but it was not good enough to stop the Virgin Islanders, which got 16 points from leading gunner Devon Peltier and 13 from the equally enterprising Khalid Gerard.

Meanwhile, Carlos Figuero led the way with 21 points as he guided the Puerto Rico to an impressive 100-61 victory over St Kitts/Nevis in the second round of matches at the same venue yesterday.

Victor Vivilla also chipped in with 19 points and Melvin Felix 16 as the Puerto Ricans led throughout the match.

Leon Henry was outstanding for the Kittitians with a game-high 23 points and Gerard Bantarpool scored 15 points.

The Puerto Rican girls were also victorious yesterday as they clobbered regional giants Jamaica 50-30 in a match they made look ridiculously easy.

Rosado was again the leading scorer with 16 points. Zoennin Pallens added an impressive 13 points.

No Jamaican reached double-digits as Christine Mitchell led them with eight points.

In another match the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) recorded a convincing 86-63 win over minnows Antigua and Barbuda, while the defending boys champions Bahamas cruised to victory 52-41 over Barbados in the other game.

Two other games were played early yesterday, while both Trinidad and Tobago teams were scheduled to be in action later.
