Marin, Mohammed win in Evian tennis


LAURA MARIN and Carlista Mohammed had similar crushing victories as the Evian-sponsored National Open Tennis Championships continued yesterday at the Public Courts, Princes Building Grounds, Port-of-Spain.


The third seeded Marin blanked Keshia Lewis 6-0, 6-0 in the women’s singles quarter-finals while the fourth seeded Mohammed also eliminated Kandice Boodlal from the last eight without losing a game.


Second-seeded Andrew Awai progressed to the next round of the men’s singles with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Kendal Cuffy, while Jonathan Charles hammered Ronald Robinson 6-1, 6-0, Richard McLetchie disposed of Liam Gomez 6-4, 6-1 and Kyle Hannays defeated Jack Su 6-0, 5-0 retired.


In the veteran men’s singles, Athelstan Phillips eased past Michael Irish 7-5, 6-4 while Ivor Jack whipped Roy Peters 6-4, 6-3.


Swaran Maharaj advanced to the semis when his opponent Michael Cooper retired after winning the second set at 6-2. Maharaj took the first 6-4, while Michael Pemberton had a walkover win over Dipnarine Rampersad.


Action continues from 4 pm today with the men’s singles, with highly-fancied Ivor Grazette facing Christian Smith in one of eight scheduled encounters.
