Substantial sum paid for release of Nath brothers


ONE OF the suspects in the kidnapping of Sangre Grande brothers Richard and Ronald Nath told investigators a substantial ransom was paid on Saturday for the release of the men.


The man was among 11 persons detained at the Port-of-Spain CID for the kidnappings.


The ransom was reportedly shared among the suspects and Newsday was told the kidnappers had planned to extort more money from the parents of the kidnapped men.


However, a tip-off from one of the suspects detained at Manzanilla on home of their parents, Donald and Sumintra. They are reported to be still recovering from their ordeal, although they are expected to resume duties at Nath’s Furniture Store shortly.


The brothers, who are expected to attend an identification parade today, told police they were kidnapped while driving along the Valencia Stretch on June 27.


They said they were stopped by three persons wearing police uniform Saturday night, led police officers to a house at Enterprise, Chaguanas, on Sunday where the brothers were rescued. None of the ransom money has been recovered.


Police investigators told Newsday with the arrest of two Special Reserve Police officers among the 11 suspects detained, they strongly suspect some members of the Police Service are involved in organised crime. They said more arrests are imminent.


At Sangre Grande yesterday, the brothers remained secluded at the and were bundled into a vehicle, blindfolded, gagged and bound.


They said they were threatened and as a result, they feared for their lives.
