TT girls get first Carib b-ball win


TRINIDAD and Tobago Under-18 basketballers took their tally to two wins in three games in the Fifth Caribbean Junior Basketball Championship at the University of the West Indies Sports and Physical Education Centre, St Augustine Campus with a 90-80 victory over Antigua and Barbuda in over-time on Monday night.


And the Under-20 girls scored their first victory of the championship when they destroyed Barbados 74-54 in the first match at the same venue, much to the delight of the local fans.


At the end of the alloted 60 minutes, the scores were tied 79-79 before the Trinidad and Tobago youngsters, led by impressive skipper Kensley Sandy outlasted their opponents scoring 11 points in the extra period to just one by the visitors.


Sandy led his team with 26 points, his championship best, while Jamille King scored 24. Kerry McMillian added a personal best 19 and Michael Sandiford 11 for the men in red, white and black.


Antigua and Barbuda put up very little resistance in the extra-time period but were led by Kareem Nedd scoring 12 points and George Francis also 12.


Led by Alicia Liverpool with 21 points, Afeisha Noel 16 and Angel Ottley 11, the local under-20 girls blew out the opposition to keep their chances alive.


They were scheduled to play Bahamas last night. The Barbadians were no match for the Trinidadians and only Ruth Holder who had 19 points reached double digits.


In matches played earlier yesterday, Jamaica whipped St Kitts/Nevis 91-72 in boys action, while the leaders Puerto Rico crushed the United States Virgin Islands 101-38 in a girls game and Jamaica edged Barbados 49-48 in a thriller.
