Illegally tax businessman

PLANS to "tax" a Beetham Gardens businessman went awry for a well- known Beetham man yesterday as he was killed while trying to commit an illegal act.

Dead is construction worker Jovel Jack, 24, of 24th Street, Beetham Gardens.

According to reports, police after learning of a planned, violent taxing of a businessman in the area, went to his business place to await Jack and his associate. However, as time passed, the police officers decided to leave.

Around 12.15 pm while the businessman, his brother and a friend were at the former’s 8th Street, Beetham Gardens home, Jack and another man, both armed entered, and demanded money from the businessman in order to protect him. The businessman indicated that he had no money, and could not pay.

Jack’s associate then pulled out a gun and attempted to pull the trigger but the gun did not go off. Seizing the opportunity, the businessman and the other two men attacked the two gunmen.

Jack’s associate fled, while the men caught Jack. He was beaten and stabbed twice in the back. A boulder was also dropped on his head, killing him instantly.

Police were later called in. They seized a blood-stained knife. While the businessman, 30, his brother 27 and the friend, 24 were detained for questioning.

Efforts to find Jack’s gun proved futile.

Investigations revealed that Jack, who was also a suspect in the June 29 murder of Kevin Hamilton on 8th Street, was released from prison two months ago for a firearm possession offence. He also had five similar offences and is a suspect in several shootings in the Laventille and Beetham area. Several residents described him as "a menace" and expressed satisfaction in seeing him killed.

At the time of his death Jack was employed as a labourer on the drainage project in Beetham, and took some time off from work when he was killed.

Attempts to speak to his mother Helen Jack were futile but a relative told Newsday that Jack was a quiet, cool ‘fella’ who went to collect "something," but was killed by men who set him up because he was not liked.

"He got a telephone call to come and collect something and when he went he was ambushed. Whoever killed him must pay," cried the relative.

Three men are currently assisting police in their investigations.

Visiting the scene were Supt Morain, ASP Gonzales, Insp Singh, Sgts Boyce and Stewart, Cpl Charles and others. Cpl Charles is continuing inquiries.
