Trini extradited to Pennsylvania

ANOTHER Trinidadian has been extradited to the United States. This time, it was Lyman Ali, whose US address was given as Lehigh Avenue, Union New Jersey. Ali, 35, is wanted in the United States for possession and trafficking cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and oxycodone. He is also charged with money laundering.

Yesterday, Ali was sent packing to the United States to face the Grand Jury charges. Two US Marshals arrived in Trinidad on Tuesday.

Ali, in handcuffs, arrived at the Piarco International Airport at 12.50 pm yesterday, accompanied by two US Marshals and members of the Organised Crime and Narcotics Unit (OCNU) headed by Asst Supt Franklyn Edwards.

The wanted man later boarded American Airlines flight 1668 which left Trinidad shortly before 3 pm for Miami Inter-national Airport.

Ali was indicted on April 14 by a US District Court, Middle District Pennsylvania, on two charges. The first indictment stated that Ali was charged with conspiracy to manufacture and distribute controlled substances. The other indictment was that Ali was charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Ali is accused in the US of conspiracy to traffic heroin for the purpose of trafficking, conspiracy to traffic cocaine, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, conspiracy to traffic marijuana, possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, conspiracy to traffic oxycodone, possession of oxycodone for the purpose of trafficking, and money laundering.

Ali, who has US residency status, fled the United States after he learnt that he was wanted for several offences. After he left JFK International Airport some months ago, Immigration officials in the US found out that he came to Trinidad where he has a number of relatives in Tacarigua. A request was made by the US authorities to the Trinidad and Tobago Government. It was then passed on to OCNU who began the search for the wanted man.
