Anti-Crime Unit to tackle illegal quarrying shortly
Brigadier Peter Joseph, the director of the Special Anti-Crime Unit (SUATT) said yesterday that illegal quarrying run by criminal elements would be phased out shortly. According to the SUATT Director, certain operations which would involve covert and overt procedures, would be put in place shortly to deal with the situation. A committee which has been set up to look at illegal quarrying, carried out intelligence information-gathering and submitted proposals to Cabinet.
According to Joseph, he could not divulge much about the operations but assured, the procedures would be effective. Recently, the Ministry of National Security was informed about illegal quarrying in the Valencia Forest. The operations there are suspected to be run by a Muslim organisation. Intelligence information supplied by SUATT revealed that certain criminal elements were also using the quarry site as a hideout, and to store illegal weapons.
