Torres opens new high-tech facility for the blind
AFTER FIVE years based at the offices of the TT Blind Welfare Association in Port-of-Spain, the Torres Foundation for the Blind officially opened their own office yesterday at Capital Plaza on Frederick Street. At the official opening ceremony, president of the Foundation, Ancil Torres, reminded members of the differently-abled community of the long road they travelled to acquire their new office. Torres said there had been "a real estate issue" at the premises they previously occupied and they were evicted on March 31. At the time, the Torres Foundation offered technology services to differently-abled people who completed programmes in word processing and Internet use. Now with their own office, Torres said it was time for the Foundation to expand their existing programmes and introduce a new programme, Descriptive Video Rental Service. The Foundation’s new offices include a reception area, administrative office, conference room, reading room and a new technology centre. The latter is equipped with cutting edge technology for the blind and the sighted, including screen magnification, voice recognition, synthetic speech, braille and wireless technology. Via the Internet, the Foundation will also offer distance learning classes from the United States Organisations responsible for assisting with the opening of the Torres Foundation’s new offices include Illuminat, Citibank, TSTT and the Ministry of Social Services Delivery.
