TT bag three CAC Games silver medals

SPRINTER Aaron Armstrong of Trinidad and Tobago ran the race of his life to secure the runner-up spot and silver medal in the final of the 200 metres dash at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Nassau, Bahamas, yesterday.

The race was won by Jamaican Usain Bolt in a time of 20.03 seconds, while Armstrong, son of former national Olympian Ainsley Armstrong, crossed the line in 20.35.

Bahamian Dominic Demeritte claimed the bronze medal in a wind-assisted 20.47 seconds, while Barbadian ace Obadele Thompson managed only fourth in 20.53 seconds.

The race preceeded two other silver medal performances by Trinidadians with Cleopatra Borel and Sheridan Kirk added to the country’s medal tally.

Borel heaved the steel ball 18.05 metres to take the runners up spot in the women’s Shot Putt final, while the effervescent Kirk got silver in the men’s 800 metres.

Rhonda Watkins surprisingly finished out of the medals in the Long Jump

finishing only ninth in the final with a leap of 5.86 metres. Cuban Yargerys Sav Harrera took the gold at 6.88 metres.

Meanwhile, Darrel Brown and Marc Burns led a strong Trinidad and Tobago 4x100 metres relay team to a new national and Games record on Sunday night.

The duo, who won gold and silver medals respectively in the 100 metres a few days ago, teamed up with Aaron Armstrong and Jacey Harper in the one-lap event and sprinted to the line in a new record time of 38.47 seconds.

The Netherland Antilles got the silver in 38.92 while Bahamas got the bronze 39.08 seconds.

Ato Modibo also added to the bulging bag of TT medals when he ran an excellent race to finish in 45.46 seconds, which was good enough for silver.

He finished close on the heels of gold medallist Lansford Spence of Jamaica who clocked 45.29 seconds with Chris Brown of Bahamas getting bronze in 45.57 seconds.
